My thoughts,
I hate McAfee! It is bloated, slow and offers only average protection. If you are looking for a free, light, and excellent AV solution and you have Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 I would use the built-in Windows Defender. Auto-updates, super light, no nag screens and tremendously improved from earlier versions. It is fully automatic.
If you are on Windows 7, I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. Also free and lightweight. You will need to download it though. Windows Defender on Windows 7 built-in is malware protection only. Windows Defender on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 is full anti-virus/anti-malware blocking.
The only other free AV that I could recommend would be Bit Defender Free. In any case, you must uninstall any competing AV programs, so that you have ONE, (and only one) AV solution running in full time. (More than one AV running in the background will conflict and slow down your system.) In the case of Windows Defender on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, it can not be uninstalled because it is built-in, but can be turned off if you have a different AV running in full time.

I would also recommend installing Ad Block Plus for each web-browser to help guard and block Internet ads that can lead to malware. Only one ad blocker per browser is recommended. Over the years, I have found all the other AV solutions such as McAfee, Norton, and Avast, too bloated, and slowing down PC's more than protecting them.
