Vielen Sprache, presuming that Mac OS X 10.6.5 runs in a sufficiently similar manner on your iMac as it does on my MacBookPro, try the following steps: • Under System Preferences, in the Personal section, select “Language & Text”. • Select “Input Sources”. • In the scrolling input method menu, select “Dutch”, “German”, and either “Russian” or “Russian - Phonetic”. (If you prefer the standard Russian keyboard layout, where pressing the G key on your keyboard produces П, then select “Russian”. If you prefer a Russian layout that roughly corresponds to a Cyrillic version of a U.S. layout, where pressing the G key produces Г, then select “Russian - Phonetic”.) • I also recommend selecting the “Allow a different one for each document” radio button, and ensuring that the “Show Input menu in menu bar” checkbox is selected, although neither of these selections is necessary. • Close System Preferences. At this point, all of your selected keyboard layouts should be available for you to use, without needing a different keyboard or extra software. If you selected to show the Input menu in your menu bar, then the flag symbol in the menu bar will show you which layout is active, and you can click on the flag to change the active layout. Alternatively, the active layout can be changed by typing ⌥ ⌘ Space (Option Command Space) to change the current keyboard layout to the next layout in the list, and ⌘ Space (Command Space) will change it to the previous layout in the list. For example, starting from a U.S. layout, ⌥ ⌘ Space might change it to Dutch, and ⌘ Space would change it back to U.S., and another ⌘ Space might change it to Russian.
A phonetic keyboard has an obvious advantage if your physical keyboard does not have Russian letters. On a PC or a Mac a phonetic keyboard mapping is always a choice (Macs even have one in the basic package), and the switching between the languages is done by keyboard shortcuts (Shift+Alt / ⌘ + Space).
